It is important that anything you put in your recycling bin is empty and dry so the paper does not get damp or wet.
Some of your recycling is sorted by hand so it is important that no dangerous items such as knives, needles and batteries are placed in this bin.

We do not currently accept plastic yoghurt pots, tubs, trays and carrier bags in our recycling collections. We are looking for a UK company who can process these items here in the UK. Wakefield Council do not export any rubbish outside the UK. We will be adding these items in the next few years and will let you know when we do.
The Council is advising people to wash and squash plastic bottles to aid recycling and create more space in your bin.
Your green bin is for your general household rubbish.
Some items can still cause damage to the machinery or dangerous situations such as fires and blockages.
Anything with a battery, plug or charger, for example, should be taken to an HWRC or WEEE bank to be recycled, not placed in the green bin.
Textiles can get wrapped around machinery and cause damage. Even if your textiles items are not suitable for reuse, you can take them to the HWRC or bring site for recycling.
Larger items should not be placed in your bins such as empty gas canisters, car parts and large metal items. These cause damage to our equipment. Please take them to your nearest HWRC.
Recyclable items are removed from your household rubbish. The food waste is also extracted onsite and sent to an anaerobic digester. This converts the food into gas which is used to generate electricity on the site. Any material which cannot be recycled is sent to Ferrybridge Power Station as a fuel to generate electricity.
Most household waste will be used to produce valuable energy, rather than being sent to landfill sites.
Your garden waste is bought to our site at South Kirkby and processed at our specialist facility.
Your garden waste is turned into soil improver which can then be added to soil improve its structure and nutrient level.
Please only place the correct items in your Brown Garden Bin so the quality of the product is not affected.
The Council collects Garden Waste from mid- March to the end of November.
