Pontefract Library Hosts Districts First-Ever Repair Café, Saving 56.9 kg of CO₂

Pontefract Library buzzed with activity on 11th October as it hosted its first ever Repair Café, offering community members the chance to breathe new life into their belongings. The event, running from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm, saw four skilled volunteer fixers from the local community join forces with three staff members from Biffa to help residents with their repairs.

Community members brought items in need of fixing, including a range of well-loved and essential objects. Among the successful repairs were:

  • A broken fly-zip on work trousers
  • A button replaced on a pair of shorts
  • A cherished mug with a repaired handle
  • Replaced poppers on Santa’s suit, just in time for the festive season
  • A pancake maker that was returned to working order
  • A cinefilm projector, where the issue was diagnosed, and advice was given on sourcing parts for a full repair

These efforts not only saved money and extended the life of personal items but also made a meaningful environmental impact, saving approximately 56.9 kg of CO₂ emissions, equivalent to driving 236 miles. Each repair helped to divert waste from landfills, aligning with the Café’s mission of reducing waste and promoting sustainable practices in the community.

The success of this Repair Café is a positive step in fostering a culture of repair and sustainability in Pontefract. Organisers hope that this event is the first of many, encouraging more residents to think about repairing rather than discarding.
